Green with Envy Interior designer Katie Geresy let location steer this kitchen’s aesthetic. “This house is nestled into the great basin of Lake Tahoe in the high Sierras,” she notes. “We salute the talented firms on the 2025 ML List of Top Mountain Builders, compiled from recommendations we received from our readers, photographers, vendors, architects, designers and staff.”
This home project was all about embracing and overcoming challenges, and the results speak for themselves. Every square inch of the house was carefully planned, thought out and enhanced to meet the owners’ needs. As Mark Tanner, the home’s builder, says: “It’s simply a higher quality home that you haven’t seen in Tahoe Donner, so it sets a new standard for the entire Tahoe region.”
The home was designed inside and out to accommodate a young, active family without compromising style. The end result is a beautiful and comfortable home with plenty of entertaining space for family and friends.
Set on a downsloping lot on Clear Creek Tahoe’s third green, this family home proves that putting trust in the right team can lead to exceptional results. Ryan Marsden sums up his main directive for the design after earning his clients’ faith: “Make it awesome.”
Often working in near-impossible conditions including raging winds, white-out blizzards, subzero temperatures and wildlife on jobs sites, mountain homebuilders are intrepid professionals. They deserve a standing ovation for making the dreams of homeowners, designers and architects come true. In our 2024 Top Mountain Builders list we recognize their accomplishments by including firms at the… Read more »
Scott Gillespie, principal and founder of Truckee’s SANDBOX Studio, has designed homes larger than this 6,870-square-foot Clear Creek Tahoe retreat. He has not, however, designed a great room bigger than the social hub of what the owners affectionately refer to as the “Grizzly on the Green.” The name references something the owner’s father told him,… Read more »

Written by Ann Johnson | Mountain Homes | Winter 2022-2023 | Photography by Kat Alves Classic Tahoe architecture is perhaps best defined by lodge-style homes complete with floor-to-ceiling stone fireplaces, log rafters and gables. Beads of sweat emerge on my forehead as I maneuver around a 2,200-degree forge, careful not to step between glowing steel and hardened blacksmiths working in perfect unison.
